China on Sunday released a geologic atlas set of the global moon with a scale of 1:2.5 million, which is the first complete high-definition lunar geologic atlas in the world, providing basic map data for future lunar research and exploration. This geologic atlas set, available in both Chinese and English, includes the Geologic Atlas of the Lunar Globe and the Map Quadrangles of the Geologic Atlas of the Moon, according to the Institute of Geochemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
China's Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST), the world's largest single-dish radio telescope, has identified more than 900 new pulsars since its launch in 2016. The telescope provides astronomers around the globe with a powerful tool to uncover the mysteries and evolution of the universe, said Jiang Peng, chief engineer of the FAST. One of the important implications of the research on pulsars is to provide cosmic coordinates for possible future interstellar travel.
In a hospital in Wuwei, northwest China's Gansu Province, a medical facility consisting of large pieces of steel and complex coils occupies a building of 30 meters high. The high-speed carbon ions produced by it are channeled into the treatment room to kill the tumor cells of cancer patients. The advanced medical facility, called heavy-ion accelerator, is assisting human's fight against cancers. However, due to its large size, high production and maintenance costs, it has not been widely used in ordinary hospitals.
In a study recently published in the journal Science, a team of researchers led by Huang Yuanyuan from the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Zhang Ganlin from the Institute of Soil Science of the CAS, have quantified the global store of SIC, challenging the long-held view.
Whenever XIE Congxin talks about his research work, his eyes light up with passion. Research is the most meaningful aspects of his life for XIE. "I have been dedicated to the solution to a problem for the past three years, which is how to improve the energy density of aqueous batteries," XIE said. Aqueous batteries are mainly used for large-scale stationary energy storage. They use water as the solvent for the electrolyte, which greatly improves battery safety compared with traditional non-aqueous lithium-ion batteries. However, challenges are, their low energy density and low battery voltage due to the limited solubility of electrolytes.
Luo Jie, an associate researcher from the Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, is a keen diving enthusiast, which allows him to breed corals not only limited to his laboratory but also in real waters. Luo still recalls the vast, colorful "undersea forests" he encountered nine years ago as a novice diver. However, the beautiful scenes have been long replaced by more and more pale coral "graveyards."
Wind-blown sand hazards have always been a key challenge for economic and social development and ecological conservation in arid areas. In response to the need for desertification prevention and ecological conservation in Xinjiang, LEI Jiaqiang strives to promote the technologies of desertification control. He and his team have undertaken a series of desertification control projects related to railways, highways, oil fields, water conservancy, and others in China.
