Metamaterials can achieve arbitrary electromagnetic parameters in principles. This enables us to manipulate conveniently the propagation of electromagnetic/optical waves. They have greatly extended our knowledge about the nature, and have exhibited many novel physical phenomena and vast potential applications. During the five-year period of support, the members of this 973 project have published 588 papers in this research field (535 SCI papers), including Science, , Material Today, Phys. Rev. Lett., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Nano Letters and Adv. Mater.. 60 patents have been submitted, of which 21 patents have already been issued. The members are active in organizing international conferences, and several international conferences have been held successfully. They are also active in attending important international conferences, and have given more than 80 invited talks including 5 plenary talks.
