In the afternoon of June 12th 2013, the high-level academic report of the First Annual Conference series of Zhejiang University was held by the Faculty of Information at Shao Yifu Building in Yuquan Campus. Professor Tianyou Chai, the famous expert in the fields of control theory and control engineering, Chinese Academy of Engineering, director of the Information Division of the National Natural Science Foundation, was invited to give a wonderful speech. This meeting was chaired by professor Xu Liu, the director of The Faculty of Information, ZJU. Over hundreds of people attended the meeting.
Professor Chai gave the report on “the modeling, control and optimization of the modern industrial systems driven by big data”. He emphasized the importance of the “big data” application, and pointed out that an inevitably important factor “human” has been completelyintegrated intoa series of complicatedsocial problems with therapid development ofnetwork informationsystems. How to use the"big data"tosolve the practical industrial problems is vitally important, and it will become the new research direction of information technology. Professor Chai answered many questions proposed by the participants, such as the distinction of science discovery in the period of Einstein and “big data”, the fault diagnosis of automatic control system, etc. He hoped that the teachers in university should focus on the basic research, develop their own scientific spirit, combine theory with practice and develop original inventions and technologies.
